Rock Chip Repair Frequently Asked Questions

Here are some questions I’ve been asked over the years about rock chip repairs.

How does a windshield rock chip repair work?
First, a small drill is used to open up the crack so it can be repaired. Once it’s open, a repair fixture is attached to the windshield with suction cups and air is removed from the crack. Then resin is added and the fixture is pressurized to allow the resin to enter the crack. A UV light or sunlight then cures the resin to harden it and keep the crack from spreading.
How do I know if the damage can be repaired?
If your windshield damage is smaller than the size of a quarter, then it may qualify for repair. However, there are other factors that can play a role in its reparability. Just give me a call and I’ll take a look to see if it can be repaired.
How long does a windshield rock chip repair take?
Depending on the type of crack, a repair can take a few minutes to a half and hour.
Can a repair be redone if I don't like how it turns out?
No, once the resin has been hardened, there isn’t anything else that can be done to the repair. That’s why it’s important not to try to repair it yourself and to have someone qualified to repair the crack.
Is there a possibility that the crack will spread during the repair?
In some cases the crack will worsen during the repair. The technician must pay attention during the repair process so that he can stop immediately if the crack starts to spread. If this happens, you won’t be charged and the windshield would have to be replaced.
Is there anything else that I need to do after the repair?
No. Once the repair is completed the windshield is back to normal you are able to drive the car right away.
How long does a rock chip repair last?
The windshield chip repair is a permanent fix and the damage won’t crack further. The repair will last forever without any additional care.
Does the windshield chip disappear?
You will still see the initial impact point of the rock. In most cases the dark shadow around the chip will completely disappear. Here is an image of what you can expect for most repairs.
